How to Run HYROX Classes That Fill: Formats, Programming, and Floor Logistics
A gym owner's guide to HYROX classes: five formats that work, 12 class ideas, a 6-week programming block, heat and equipment math, pricing benchmarks, and the affiliation decision.

A HYROX class is a coached group session built on the race's pattern - run (or erg), work a station, repeat - scaled so a mixed room can train it together. Members are already searching for these classes: the official Gym Finder exists because demand outruns supply, Orangetheory and F45 have built whole programs around the race, and gym members are literally asking on Reddit what a hyrox class is like before their gyms offer one. This guide is for the owner or head coach on the other side of that demand: the class formats that work on a real floor, twelve session ideas, a six-week programming block, the heat math and equipment minimums, what to charge, and whether official affiliation is worth it.
Why HYROX classes fill (and keep filling)
Three properties make hyrox classes the strongest group-fitness format of the decade for member retention.
A goal with a date: Members training for a race attend more consistently than members training "to get fit," and every HYROX season hands them a new date.
Progress they can measure: The format is fixed, so week-12 versus week-1 is a number, not a feeling - and numbers get shared.
A ladder that never ends: Finish → beat your time → Doubles with a friend → the next city. Franchises noticed: F45 runs a three-phase HYROX program as an official training partner, and Orangetheory pitches HYROX-prep as a member benefit. Independent gyms can do it better - with sharper programming and their own community - which is the rest of this page. The economics reward the effort twice: hyrox classes monetize as packs and add-on tiers (not just timetable filler), and the quarterly sim event doubles as your highest-converting open day - non-members pay to race on your floor, then join. Retention is the quiet third win: a member chasing a race date has a reason to show up in week 37 that "fitness" never provides.
Five HYROX class formats that work
- The station circuit (60 min, any room size). Stations set up in race order where possible; members rotate in timed work/rest blocks; runs become 200–400 m treadmill, track, or shuttle efforts between stations. The default weekly class - scales from 8 to 30 people with heat waves.
- The run-station hybrid (45–60 min). Longer run segments (400–800 m) with two or three station blocks - the compromised-running engine builder. Lower equipment load, high turnover; perfect for a second weekly slot.
- Benchmark day (every 3–4 weeks). One fixed test - half the stations at race dose, or a timed station ladder - scored and recorded, same format every cycle. This is the class that makes progress visible and retention stick.
- Doubles night (the social one). Partner formats: you-go-I-go splits, shared rep targets, forced handovers. Lowest intimidation for newcomers, highest sign-up-with-a-friend rate, and it trains the division most of your members will actually race first.
- The simulation event (quarterly). A booked, ticketed, race-order full or half sim with heats, judges from your coaching staff, spectators welcome. Run it like an event, not a class - it converts your class regulars into race entrants and your community into content.
How a 60-minute HYROX class actually flows
The formats above all run on the same skeleton, so brief your coaches once:
Minutes 0–10 - whiteboard-free briefing off the screen: today's flow, the one movement standard being judged (rotate weekly), heat assignments.
Minutes 10–15 - targeted prep: the mobility and positions today's stations load.
Minutes 15–55 - the work, in heats, with the display running the rotation so the coach coaches.
Minutes 55–60 - scores logged, next benchmark date named, and the block's storyline reinforced ("two weeks to sim day"). The discipline that separates a program from a timetable is the last five minutes: logged scores and a named next date are why members rebook before they leave the room.
12 HYROX class ideas you can run this month
Each idea is a floor format; where an athlete-facing version exists, it's linked so your coaches can lift the prescription directly.
- Grip day - sled pull + farmers ladder in pairs (athlete version).
- Wall-ball clinic - standards teaching + break-strategy sets to a target line.
- The 4×4 rotation - four stations, four heats, EMOM-style flow for big rooms.
- Sled school - technique block then push/pull intervals (no sleds? equipment substitutes that keep the stimulus).
- Roxzone races - transition-speed drills; the cheapest seconds in the sport.
- Erg engine night - SkiErg/row intervals with run brick finishers.
- Half-sim heats - 4 runs + 4 stations in waves (format).
- Doubles draft night - random partners, split-strategy coaching.
- Standards & no-reps - judge-your-buddy class before race season (standards guide).
- The descending ladder - station volumes drop as run pace targets rise.
- Compromised 5K - continuous run broken by three station visits.
- Race-week taper class - short, sharp, familiar; confidence over fatigue.
Programming a 6-week class block
Run classes in repeating six-week blocks that end in a simulation - the block structure is what turns drop-in attendance into committed cohorts. Weeks 1–2: movement standards + baseline benchmark. Weeks 3–4: volume builds, doubles night enters the rotation. Week 5: sharpen - shorter, faster, race-order rehearsals. Week 6: the sim event, scored and celebrated, with the next block's start date announced before everyone leaves the floor. Coaches program each slot from the formats above; members see a season, not a timetable.

Floor logistics: equipment, heats, and screens
-
Equipment minimums (for a 12-person class): 2 sleds (or a substitute plan), 2 SkiErgs, 2 rowers, 4+ wall-ball targets, kettlebell pairs across the weight range, 2 sandbags, and marked 12.5 m lanes. You don't need race spec for every athlete at once - you need rotation math.
-
Heat math: work stations in pairs (one works, one counts/rests) and cap each station group at 2× the equipment count. A 24-person class on 2 sleds means 4-minute station windows with staggered run releases - write the rotation before the class, not during it.
-
A worked example (20 people, 60 minutes): five groups of four; stations at sled push, sled pull, SkiErg, rowers, and a wall-ball/lunge floor block; 6-minute windows with 90-second transitions; runs released in pairs every 2 minutes to keep the lane clear. Each member hits every station once with the run bricks between - race pattern, full room, two pieces of each big item. Write it once, save it as a template, and Tuesday's coach never re-invents Thursday.
-
Put the flow on your screens. The single biggest operational upgrade for hyrox classes is the room seeing the session: current station, work targets, who's up next, the clock. Coaches coach instead of directing traffic. That's exactly what Fit Viz class programming on gym displays does - the session library renders station flow, timers, and heat rotations to every screen, and members follow their 8 & 12-week plan between classes in the same app your floor runs.

Filling the classes: pricing, packages, and booking
Published benchmarks are rare, but one official Training Club - Drive Custom Fit in New Hampshire - lists its HYROX circuit at $30 drop-in, $199.99 for an 8-pack, and $549 for three months unlimited (public pricing as of Sep 2026).
The pattern that fills rooms: a class-pack or add-on tier for members, a drop-in price set high enough to push packs, and the quarterly sim as a ticketed event open to non-members - your best lead generator.
Operationally: Cap classes and run waitlists (a full HYROX class with a waitlist markets itself), open booking windows members can rely on, and track benchmark-day attendance as your retention KPI.
Class booking, packages, waitlists, and the member app are what Fit Viz booking handles natively - one system for the schedule your members book and the screens your floor runs.
Marketing the launch:
Give it a four-week runway.
- Week 1: run one HYROX-style benchmark inside your existing classes (the teaser - and your first social clips).
- Week 2: open a founding cohort at pack pricing with a hard cap.
- Week 3: announce the block's sim-event date publicly - a date sells better than a description.
- Week 4: launch with the room full and a waitlist visible.
Film benchmark days every cycle; member PB clips are the only HYROX class ideas your marketing calendar needs, and they compound each block.

Do you need to be officially affiliated?
You can run HYROX-style classes descriptively without a license - many gyms do - but you can't use the HYROX name as your program's brand without affiliation.
The official path runs through HYROX365: Academy courses for coaches (Foundation, Level 1, Level 2) and the affiliation tiers - Training Club, Performance Coach, Training Zone, Performance Hub, plus a Les Mills program partnership.
Affiliation buys the badge, Gym Finder listing, and member trust; costs aren't published. The honest calculus for most independents: start descriptively, prove the demand with full classes, then affiliate when the badge earns its fee. (Full cost/requirements breakdown in our affiliate-gym guide.)
Once you're affiliated - or even before - make sure athletes can find you: "hyrox classes near me" searches are exploding faster than gyms can answer them, and your class page plus a claimed listing in a gym directory is how those athletes land on your floor (our Find-a-HYROX-Gym directory - claiming your listing is free).
Run it all on one platform
Everything in this guide is doable with a whiteboard, a stopwatch, and a spreadsheet - gyms ran classes that way for decades. The argument for software isn't possibility; it's that your coaches' attention is the product members pay for, and every minute spent directing traffic or chasing bookings is coaching your floor didn't get.
Programming, screens, and bookings are three jobs - or one. Fit Viz was built for gyms running exactly this: the class library and 6-week blocks, station-flow displays with timers and heats, and the booking system with packs and waitlists - plus the member app your athletes already want (plans, timers, leaderboards).
